Does the funder support organizations doing work like yours? Program focus, population served, and theory of change are all assessed against the funder's stated priorities.

Geographic Eligibility

Do they fund in your city, state, or region? Many foundations restrict awards to specific areas. Geographic mismatches are the most common reason applications fail before review.

Funding Stage Match

Do they award grants to nonprofits at your stage of development? Some funders require audited financials or a minimum operating history. Others focus specifically on early-stage organizations.

Award Compatibility

Are typical grant sizes aligned with your project budget? A $500,000 request to a funder with an average award of $15,000 signals a mismatch that reviewers notice immediately.

What remains after scoring is a shortlist of funders with a realistic case for saying yes — not a list of foundations that happen to fund nonprofits.
